MS Field Trip
As part of their kitchen safety curriculum, sixth-grade Makerspace students received fire extinguisher training from Jay Griffin, a local fire safety expert. The training, organized by Mrs. O’Meara, aimed to teach students essential safety skills while working in the kitchen. Jay Griffin provided an engaging demonstration, showing students how to properly operate a fire extinguisher using the PASS method: Pull the pin, Aim at the base of the fire, Squeeze the handle, and Sweep side to side. Students practiced these steps with an actual extinguisher, gaining confidence in handling emergency situations. The session emphasized the importance of fire prevention and preparedness, offering students valuable knowledge they can apply in both the Makerspace kitchen and their own homes. This hands-on experience gives students the skills they need to stay safe while fostering responsibility and awareness in the kitchen. The fire extinguisher training is just one example of how the Makerspace program integrates practical life skills into its innovative curriculum, empowering students with knowledge that extends beyond the classroom.

Blue Team got a taste of old-fashioned preservation techniques by learning how to make jam from garden-fresh fruit! This hands-on activity is part of a broader middle school initiative, funded by a generous grant from the Whole Kids Foundation, to explore creative ways to preserve the bounty of their garden harvest. Students are discovering the science and sustainability behind turning fresh produce into lasting treats while building practical skills they can use beyond the classroom.
