At Indian Lake Central School, responsibility isn’t just a word—it’s a trait modeled daily by staff who go above and beyond for students and the school community. This month, students were invited to nominate a teacher or staff member they believe exemplifies the character trait of Responsibility—and their voices were loud and clear: Mr. Hutchins, School Safety Officer, was selected as the recipient of the Responsibility Award.
Throughout the month, students shared heartfelt reasons for their nominations. One student said, “He is responsible for our school’s safety every single day. He goes to doors after school when you would think he wants to be home.” Another wrote, “Mr. Hutchins makes sure every student and staff member is safe all day every day... I am very thankful for his responsibility and helping everyone.” It’s clear that his daily dedication to protecting the school and building positive relationships has not gone unnoticed.
Mr. Hutchins is not only a constant presence at entryways and hallways, but also a mentor and role model—facilitating the boys group and offering support where it's needed most. As one student put it simply, “He holds a lot of responsibility by keeping all of the students at school safe.”
While Mr. Hutchins was the top nominee, many other outstanding teachers and staff members were also recognized for their responsible actions and leadership. Students nominated:
Mr. MacNeal (Math) – For helping students in and out of the classroom.
Mr. McCauliffe (Social Studies) – For being honest and dependable, especially during tough times.
Mr. Peet (Physical Education) – For his daily dedication to younger students and his consistent positive attitude.
Mrs. Bennett (Math/HS Lead) – For putting students first, staying on top of her responsibilities, and always lending a helping hand.
Mrs. Hinckley (French) – For keeping students focused and making sure work gets done.
Mrs. Hoag (Reading Specialist) – For caring deeply and always being on task.
Mrs. Mitchell (Special Education) – For making time for others, even when her schedule is full.
Mrs. Mulvey (Superintendent) – For keeping the school running smoothly and being a kind, steady leader.
Mrs. Wolfe (Library Media Specialist) – For organizing middle school advisory, field trips, and always following through on promises.
Mr. Jim Pine (Long-Term Substitute) – For stepping in and staying committed, even when he didn’t have to.
Each of these nominees represents the spirit of responsibility in a unique way, and their efforts continue to shape a school culture built on care, consistency, and character.
Congratulations to Mr. Hutchins and to all of our nominees! Thank you for leading by example and showing our students what responsibility looks like in action.
