2-5 Field Trip

On a beautiful, sun-drenched day with the lake shimmering like glass, students from Indian Lake grades 2-5 embarked on an unforgettable field trip. The day began with eager anticipation as the children boarded the historic WW Durant for a delightful pizza cruise and a journey back in time to the days of the steamboat era.

Cruising Raquette Lake

As the WW Durant glided smoothly over the pristine waters of Raquette Lake, the children marveled at the serene beauty surrounding them. The weather couldn't have been more perfect, with clear skies and the lake reflecting the brilliant blue overhead. The cruise culminated with a feast of delicious pizza, much to the delight of the young adventurers. Laughter and chatter filled the air as they enjoyed their meal, surrounded by breathtaking scenery.

A Narrated Tour of History

The cruise was not just a feast for the stomach but also for the mind. As they sailed, the children were treated to a fascinating narrated tour, detailing the rich history of Raquette Lake and the visionary behind it, William West Durant. They learned about Durant's significant contributions to the development of the Adirondack Great Camps, a unique architectural style that blended rustic simplicity with luxurious comfort.

Exploring Great Camp Pine Knot

The highlight of the trip was the visit to Great Camp Pine Knot, one of the most famous camps built by William West Durant. Stepping off the boat, the children found themselves transported to a bygone era. They toured the beautifully preserved cabins, each one a testament to Durant's architectural genius and the opulent lifestyle of the time.

The tour guides shared intriguing stories about life in the steamboat age, painting vivid pictures of how people lived, worked, and played in this remote yet luxurious setting. The children were particularly fascinated by the innovative designs and the blend of natural materials used in the construction of the cabins.

A Floating Fancy Cabin

Adding to the excitement was the opportunity to board a houseboat that epitomized luxury on water. This floating cabin was a marvel, showcasing how even in the late 19th century, people sought and achieved comfort and elegance in their travels. The houseboat tour was a hit, with children imagining what it must have been like to live and travel on such a vessel.

A Fantastic Field Trip

The day concluded with the students reflecting on their fantastic field trip. They had not only enjoyed a delicious meal and a beautiful boat ride but also gained a deeper appreciation for the history and ingenuity of the people who once lived in the Adirondacks. The combination of fun, food, and education made this an unforgettable experience for all.

As the bus pulled away from Raquette Lake, the children waved goodbye to the WW Durant and Great Camp Pine Knot, carrying with them memories of a perfect day on the water and a newfound curiosity about the past. This field trip was more than just an outing; it was a voyage through history, brought to life by the stunning backdrop of Raquette Lake and the timeless stories of William West Durant.
