Notes: "The first stores in the area were not in the village. There was a small settlement in Big Brook, one in Sabael, one by the Cedar River, and this one by the Indian River. The Indian River settlement was on the west side of the river, about where the Abenaki bridge is. At that time there was no dam further north and no Lake Abenaki. The Indian River ran swiftly along from the stone dam at the northern end of Indian Lake until it joined the Hudson River.

The small log building was a store run by Isaac Hoxie. He also bought furs from local trappers and lodged travellers. Later, Milo Washburn built the Indian River Hotel, the large white building in the center. In addition, Jesse Porter operated an ice house, Tuffield Depan began a leather shop, and John and Nelson Ste. Marie opened a wagon-making business."
