Ms. Sherman, Lindsey Moore, Michael Smuk, Sean Smuk, Bridget Scully, Emily Evatt, Tanya Cummins and Nick Ameden kicked off the day with a skit about the Do's and Don'ts of school (with a cameo performance by Mr. Malikowsi as "Vanna"). Ryan Flatt gave us an overview of the events that would happen during the remainder of the day. The high-school band gave a performance and Mrs. Jay and the first grade class led us in a round of wake up songs.
Officer Walker came to the school to demonstrate the effects of not wearing a seatbelt during a rollover. He brought with him a demonstration vehicle set up to simulate a rollover accident.
George Mahoney and Ken Canaan explained the rules and procedures that must be followed while on a bus. Younger students met Buster the Bus, a little talking remote controlled bus.
An picnic barbecue for all participants was provided by Julie Gundel, Bonnie Eldridge, Kathy Shortt, and Joanna Pine. Each student was given hotdogs, chips, milk, and watermelon to eat outside under a tent or on the lawn. This gave us the opportunity to catch up with our friends and talk about the events of the day.
Kevin Elkin of Community Services led us in some organized games. We played a game where we had to work together as a team to put a ball in a bucket. The final game we played was with hula hoops. We all stood in a big circle holding hands, and had to climb through the hula hoops until it came all the way back around.
Mr. Finney came to ILCS and taught everyone how to square dance. He set up his keyboard and speakers and played songs and sang. By the end of the day everyone had a chance to dance.
Karen White led a project to create a giant mural. The theme was "What would you like to see happen during the new school year?" Each student created their own panel to express their thoughts on the subject.
